Perception Club Information
Summary
Perception club is a weekly meeting (Tuesdays, 12:00) where recent work, a tutorial or a journal paper is presented by a different person each week. Please follow these basic guidelines:
- Presentation of own work is strongly encouraged and always goes down well, even when the work presented is very rough around the edges.
- Please, please, please regularly sign yourself up for any empty slots! I have to chase people up otherwise…
- We have a list of tutorial subjects that people would like to hear more on. Please don’t hesitate to add to this no matter how simple the subject may seem. Also don’t hesitate to present a tutorial!
- There is a recommended list of papers. If you wish to present a paper not on this list then let me know ([email protected]) and I’ll ask around if anyone has any (anonymous) objections.
- Any questions? Suggestions? Email me (Phil) at [email protected]

Updated journal club further:
So we met today to discuss the new format of J club, and we’ve made a few tweaks:
1) If you see an interesting paper, please suggest it, even if it’s not in a journal you’re ‘curating’.
2) I’ve become the “Master of Ceremonies” to try and make sure that JC happens more often and remind people when they’ve signed up etc. Andy will also be helping me, mainly by looking after the written stuff.
3) I’ll be emailing everyone with a list of who is taking which journal club over the next three weeks. Any gaps in those three weeks and I’ll do my best to encourage the people who haven’t taken a JC recently to do so!
4) I’m going to try and email around next week’s subject a week before with the aforesaid email – so if you’re taking a JC then expect me to chase you up a bit over a week looking for the subject that you’ll be talking about!
5) The list of papers on the website is in order to give an easy choice of journals to pick out of, and it’s a stringent list that you must choose a journal from. Its mainly there for if you don’t have any interesting methods, recent work, proposals for grants etc that you want to talk though. If you are thinking of presenting a paper that’s not on the list it would be a nice idea if you could float it around the mailing list first for opinions though (like I did a couple of weeks back).
I think that’s all, hope it’s agreeable!
Philip
The aim is to add a page detailing what the weekly groups meetings are about and to outline a basic formal. For now I’ll just put up a copy of Dhanraj’s email.
Hi Visionistas
I am writing to confirm our agreement regarding the future format of the Vision Labs Journal Club in today’s meeting.
In attendance were Andy, Emmanuel, Justin, Tom, Dave, Olivier and myself.
There was unanimous agreement that a change in the format and content of current JC was desirable. The main idea going forward was that there would be three types of presentations (in order of preference) :
Option 1. Presentation of ongoing research, and/or, proposed ideas & literature related to development of research.
Option 2. Presentation of tutorials based on a wish list generated by the group, especially grad students, and fulfilled voluntarily by research staff .
Option 3. Curated journal article presentation
Dave will create a new meeting page on the WordPress site that will be editable by all members of the Vision Labs. This will contain the calender, the tutorial wish list and the curated journal article list (see below) SO anyone will be able to go to this page and make additions or changes, add titles for their presentation, etc., and it will be one click away from the front page of the Lab group. Each presenter is responsible for sending out an email a few days before their presentation day informing everyone what they will be doing.
The agreement for a curated journal club format was based on the idea that we promote the presentation of cutting edge research that has be screened to be of general interest to the group. As a bonus, we are all also generally made aware of all the current cutting-edge vision/perception related papers
The way we plan to work it is as follows:
1. Each member of the group is assigned a high impact journal that they screen on a weekly/monthly basis to find articles that are in the general area of our research 2. These articles will form a ‘wish-list’ of articles from which individuals can choose to present, if they want to do option 3 above 3. The list will be curated as follows: Every week, before the actual meeting presentations, we spend five minutes where each person informs the others of any relevant papers that have appeared in the journal they are monitoring (note this is any and all relevant papers in that journal) 4. the group as a whole votes up or down the paper based on interest in reading it for a future meeting.
5. Any papers that are voted ‘up’ by the group by simple majority are added to the wish list. Each individual is then responsible for posting their article link onto the meeting web page.
6. This does not preclude someone from proposing a recent paper in a specialist journal that may have broader relevance, or from an older high-impact issue, or a classic paper–again it will be voted up or down.
7. If there are more than one paper on a related topic, the presenter may choose to present multiple papers.
8. If the presenter chooses a fairly technical paper the expectation is that they will also present some background material on methods to help along the non specialists.
The following is the list of journals and assigned names (everyone chose one and those not present were assigned one–if you are not happy with what you have been assigned, you can swap with someone.) If i am missing someone let me know.

We also decided it might be good to change the name of the meeting so it doesn’t slowly revert back to the old journal club model.
I have suggested Vision Labs Weekly Meeting above, but other suggestions were Perception Club, Visual Perception Meeting, Vision Group Meetings, etc. so we could still decide this.
please let me know if I have got anything wrong here!
cheers
